What is EMDR?

Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) is a research-backed form of therapy designed to help people heal from the lingering effects of trauma, anxiety, and other distressing life experiences. Unlike traditional talk therapy, EMDR works by engaging your brain’s natural healing process through guided eye movements or other forms of bilateral stimulation. This allows your brain to “reprocess” difficult memories, reducing their emotional intensity and giving you the freedom to move forward with clarity and peace.

How EMDR Helps

Traumatic or overwhelming events can sometimes get “stuck” in the brain, causing recurring distress, intrusive thoughts, anxiety, or negative beliefs about yourself. EMDR helps unlock these memories and reprocess them in a safe and supportive environment. Clients often report:

  • Reduced anxiety and emotional triggers

  • Relief from symptoms of PTSD

  • Improved self-esteem and confidence

  • Freedom from patterns of fear, shame, or avoidance

  • A greater sense of calm and resilience

What to Expect

An EMDR session is structured and collaborative. Your counselor will work with you to identify the areas you’d like to focus on, establish a sense of safety, and guide you step by step through the process. During treatment, you’ll use eye movements, tapping, or sounds to stimulate both sides of the brain while recalling aspects of a difficult memory. Over time, the memory loses its grip, and you gain new, healthier perspectives.
